Let’s talk out life’s challenges.
John Dixon
MSFT, S-MFT
I’m a therapist specializing in family conflict, teenagers, and parenting. My practice offers online and in-person sessions in Midtown Kansas City.
How I Help
Stuck? Stressed? Over it? You do not have to keep powering through alone. I work with teens, adults, and couples to tackle challenges, untangle patterns, and find practical ways forward. My approach is relaxed, collaborative, and tailored to what actually works for you.
I take a laid-back yet serious approach to therapy. We'll laugh and have a good time along the way to resolving the issues that have brought you in. I really love taking therapeutic concepts and making them digestible, memorable, and specifically applicable to individual situations.
Find Your Reset
Therapy is not about being “fixed” but about growing stronger, building better connections, and discovering new possibilities. Together we can create a space to reset, recharge, and step into a life that feels more balanced, meaningful, and yours.

Specialties & Expertice

If you’re feeling stuck in a loop of "what-ifs" or just plain over the heavy cloud of depression, you don’t have to power through alone. I take an evidence-based but relaxed approach to treating anxiety and depression here in Kansas City. We’ll skip the clinical jargon and focus on CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) techniques that actually make sense. Together, we’ll untangle those mental patterns and find practical, digestible ways to help you feel like yourself again.
-
Let's be honest: the teen years can be difficult to navigate. I work with teens and families in KC to de-escalate the drama and start a real conversation. My style is collaborative and down-to-earth—I’m not here to "fix" your kid, but to help everyone understand the patterns that aren’t working. We’ll find a way to bridge the gap, lower the stress at home, and build a connection that actually feels solid.

Men are often told to just "deal with it," and carrying that weight solo is exhausting. Whether it’s career burnout, relationship stress, or anger, I offer a laid-back, serious space for men’s therapy. We’ll tackle the challenges of fatherhood and modern masculinity using straight-talk and practical tools. No "therapy-speak"—just a collaborative environment where we can laugh, work hard, and get you back to leading a life that feels balanced and meaningful.
-
Whether you’re getting ahead of future issues with premarital counseling or trying to save a marriage that’s hitting a wall, I’m here to help you navigate it. We use proven frameworks like the Gottman Method but keep the sessions relatable and tailored to your specific dynamic. We’ll work on communication that actually sticks, helping you and your partner recharge your connection and find new possibilities together.
-
Parenting is no easy feat, and sometimes you just need a reset. I help Kansas City parents move past the constant stress and "survival mode" by making therapeutic concepts digestible and applicable to your daily life. We’ll focus on practical strategies for behavioral challenges and co-parenting, helping you create a home environment that feels less like a chore and more like yours.
Treatment Approach
Emotionally Focused
We often get stuck in the same old arguments because there’s an underlying emotional need that isn't being met. I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to help you and your partner (or family) move past the surface-level bickering. We’ll identify where you feel stuck and work on building a deeper, more secure connection so you can stop reacting and start relating. It’s about feeling seen, heard, and truly understood.
Structrual Family Therapy
Sometimes a family feels chaotic because the boundaries have gotten blurry. Using Structural Family Therapy, we look at the "hidden rules" and hierarchies within your household. I take a collaborative, active role to help you rearrange those patterns, strengthen the parental unit, and clarify roles. It’s a practical way to bring order back to the home and make sure everyone knows where they fit and how to support each other.
Solution-Focused Therapy (SFBT)
While the past matters, you’re likely here because you want things to change now. Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is all about identifying your existing strengths and using them to create a roadmap forward. We won't spend years just talking about the problem; we’ll spend our time finding what actually works for you. It’s a fast-paced, goal-oriented approach designed to help you see real, tangible progress in your daily life.
More About Me
Hi, I'm John. I run John Dixon Therapy, based and operating in Kansas City, Missouri. I became interested in working as a therapist after many years as a personal trainer. I grew to recognize the links between Physical and Mental health, and wanted to deepen my understanding of these connections. I work with all walks of life, though I have a soft spot for adolescent-parent relationships, couples, and men navigating mental health and societal roles. When I'm not working, you can find me exercising, attending concerts, and spending time with my girlfriend and our dogs.
